The Marathwada Auto Cluster is a project under Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation (IIUS) scheme of the Government of India (GoI), supported by the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MoCI), GoI and Government of Maharashtra (GoM). The structure is to act as a common facility center to support auto ancillaries and engineering units of the region. It needed to house a convention center with auditorium, exhibition area and training facilities for the same.
While keeping in mind that the campus should not feel very industrial, the form and materials were chosen to externalize the functions and the desire of the client to display the architecture of the campus as engineering-centric.
Steel was the natural choice, especially due to the requirement of long high spans demanded by the nature and function of the facility. A pre-engineered building (PEB) with infill walls, as opposed to conventional masonry, was proposed to avoid the use of water during construction. The multi-purpose hall in the center of the cluster is elevated on V-shaped circular steel columns. Deck sheet becomes the floor of the which is mounted with portal frames. These frames are used for making the auditorium structure as well.
Pockets of green and open space have been introduced in between the built form as pause points for interaction. To ensure ease of movement, all the buildings have been inter-connected with pedestrian bridges on the first floor.
The project has been awarded the ‘A.E.S.A AWARD 2016 in the Category : Outside Pune District’ for its Architectural Design & Innovative Construction Technology.
